This study was conducted during a fifteen-month period from November 2001 to January 2003. In phase one of the study, the challenge was to identify Institutions of Excellence in the First Year of College from the broad universe of colleges and universities nationwide. This task was accomplished through criterion-based or purposive sampling and evaluation of documentary evidence provided by the institutions and reviewed by a panel of experts. In phase two, in-depth analyses of the selected institutions were conducted through an extensive review of archival data and documents, site visits, and interviews.
